The Terma Foundation

Tradition holds that a terma may be a physical object such as a text or a ritual implement that is buried in the ground (or earth), hidden in a rock or crystal, secreted in a herb, or a tree, or hidden in a lake (or water), or hidden in the sky (space). In short, the literal understanding of terma is "hidden treasure". As sometimes these objects are hidden away, the teachings associated should be understood as being 'concealed within the mind of the guru ', that is, the true place of concealment is in the tertön's inner mindstream. Accordingly, one can say that it is as much concealed in the Terton own practice evolvment. If the concealed or encoded teaching or object is a text, it is often written in “dakini script”: a non-human type of code or writing. As such , termas maybe what they may be and in so many embodiment forms , that they are therefore not always immediately apparent, cognicient or made open to the hierarchy or public. The conditions may not be right; the people may not yet be ready for them; further instructions may need to be revealed to clarify their meaning, the lineage itself may be in transmutation. Often also, the tertön himself has to practice them indepth, the tertön's inner mindstream, for many years...

The options for the " Termas Spiritual Empowerment Cultural Immersion Tour in Feb 2016 are organized based on the interest defined by the foreseen Participants (membership required) for a period in situ of 14 ~ 21 days in & around Bodhnath Stupa and KTM Valley (incl. Pharping, Vajra Yogini, Nagi Gompa etc... ) and a further Option of 7 Days in Bhutan, per se! The shedule will have to remain always flexible and responding to the availability of the various Lamas, Amchis, gNakpas, Yogis or NGOs/HEIs visited and therefore can always be re-united or added to another extra more indepth option, such as Teaching, Puja, Blessing or Retreat under due supervision.

Termas, or hidden treasures, are teachings concealed by Padmasambhava and other great masters during the initial spread of Buddhism in Tibet. Terma was created as a means to revitalize and strengthen the dharma in future times when both the world and the teachings would be threatened by degradation and loss of heart. The Tertons, or treasure revealers, are rebirths of the twenty-five principle disciples of Padmasambhava, who were present when a terma teaching was originally given by Padmasambhava. Among those disciples, one would be chosen and given the command by Padmasambhava to reveal the teaching in future times as a terma. The chodak is a traditional role, vital to the transmission and preservation of a terma lineage. A chodak is the immediate successor of a terton, and the word is sometimes used to refer to a living holder of a terma lineage. Cho is the word for the dharma, or teachings of Buddhism, and dak is short for dakpo, which means both “lord” and “owner.” After a terma is discovered, a terton will give one or more chodaks the primary responsibility for propagating a terma.

These 14 or 21~ days Tours&Studies are Open Itineraries, which remain always flexible and responding to the participants main interests. They can be focused on one or several of the following 7 approaches (Options) listed hereunder:

This is a tentative itinerary only, valid for the 14 days option, which can always be flexible as per the participants wish and merge with any of the 7 options!
  2. Arrival in Kathmandu airport / TIA
If you take a usual flight, you will normally arrive in KTM (TIA) Airport (Nepal) by the end of the day. This day starts with a little breakfast followed with a Q&A session of the itineraries and agendas options, as well as details related to the indepth approaches of the chosen program. The Cultural Immersion starts with the identification of the main logistics, transports and ressources in the immediate surrounding of the Bodhnath Stupa. Meeting with selected reopresentatives of the local Tamang, Sherpa, Newar, Tibetan and other ethnic groups living in the community. Presentation of the history and legend of the Bodhnath stupa, which is one of the most frequented Buddhist Himalayan Pilgrimage. After lunch and break, visit of the first of selected monasteries, being either Shechen Gompa (Matthieu Ricard), Chokyi Nyima Gompa (Khyentse Yangsi), Dudjom Rimpoche Gompa and/or other Dharma ressources selected. Finally, at the end of the afternoon, optional short walk along the Bagmati river to reach the scared Civa Temples of Pashupatinath, traditional site for Hindu cremation and Sadhhus. Meetings in their Ashrams with selected Saddhus and Yogis.
  4. Meeting first time with the Terma Tulku in an appropriate setting.
This next day is devoted to your Meeting for first time with the Terma Tulku in an appropriate setting possibly near Bodhnath ... It may take several hours as a group, from which then personal interviews may be organized person by person. As these first meetings take place, the other participant may be willing to discover the main important sites of Kathmandu city, per se, including Thamel, Pulchowk, Jalalakhel and the location of important assets such as the Embassies, Immigration Dept, Clinics, as well as other old famous buildings such as those in Durbar Square, Hanuman Dhoka and several temples of Parvati et Mahadev.
  5. Second Meeting first time with the Terma Tulku in an appropriate setting.
The next 2 or 3 days are devoted to meeting the Termas Tulku again, receiving his advise, comment or blessings, during or after appropriate preparation for the Termas Empowerment Wang&Lungs. The details of such practice will be defined in situ with the participants...
  6. Pharping
This will be the first day out of the valley. At around 19 km out Katmandou city, at the South-West of Patan, Pharping is an old pilgrimage Newar village which has become famous during the last 25 years because of the increasing Tibetan Yoga Retreat Center being created there. One can visit several Guru Rimpoche legendary caves and temples, as well as numerous high lamas retreat center and monasteries, such as those of Jadral. Behind the Jadral Gompa, a high hill provides a wonderful view of both the valley and its faraway Himalayan range. There are numerous small paths circling the site, from the Rallu Gompa upto to the top hill prayers flags in the wind, down to the other monasteries and stupa again. The contradiction, so to say, is if one pursues the road circling down from Pharping to the river, one gets to Dakshinkali altars, which is a renown site for sacrifices to Kali. More to see and say, if we go there...
  7. Swayambunath / Kathmandu
This time, we will take the ring road to the left from Chabihil and upto the other side of the Valley to visit Swayambunath, its Stupa, Monkey hill, Monasteries and artefacts. After a short visit and description of this other famous powerplace of Kathmandu legend, we will return through Chettrapati to visit the Kunphen Tibetan Clinic, then head back to Bouddha through Thamel, Durbar Square, the Kumari house, the ex- Royal Palace (museum), etc. Optional retirn on the way to Pashupati for evening encounters...

THe main event in the second week will be the Termas EMPOWERMENT ...

Testimonies :

“This pilgrimage was both profound and extremely fun. Amid fantastic scenery we visited very simple places that touched the depths of my being and connected me to my past – my ancestors, my spirituality, my very soul in ways that led me into a future bright with promise. The call to  become body of light in ordinary every-day life is powerfully supported through this experience.” (F. W., Pasadena, CA, USA, participant in 2007 & 08)

Greetings my friend. Just a short note to say hello and I hope you are doing well. I was looking through old pictures the other day and realized it was 5 years ago last week that we made our first trip to France. It was such a magical and important trip for me. I want to thank you for all that you have done for me on the human and soul level. I also sent a note to Armand. Take care  " (R.W, CA, USA, participant in all previous Caer-Sidi' s Tours, mail on 04Nov, 2012
